How Much Time Are We Really Spending on Social Media?

My most used app is TikTok, and I spend about 2 hours and 38 minutes a day on it.

What about you? What’s your most used app, and how many hours do you spend on it?

Also—how can we make that time more useful instead of just endless scrolling? Maybe learning something new, following educational creators, or creating instead of just consuming?

  1. First of all, I really like your blog aesthetic. The color scheme makes it feel friendly and inviting.

As far as screen time… I’m embarrassed to even check mine because it could easily be 5+ hours 😭. If I’m not on YouTube, I’m on Instagram, and if not Instagram it’s TikTok or Twitter… it’s like a never ending rotation.

I really do need to do better about limiting my screen time. If nothing else, at least for my eyesight which is already not great and definitely doesn’t need any extra help getting worse 🥲

    1. It seems like we're in the same boat haha!!! I'm definitely trying to find more useful ways to be on there since I enjoy it so much. Maybe future content creators???

  2. My most-used app is probably TikTok, too, although I have been trying to become more aware of how much time I spend on it. I think your question connects well with this week’s discussion about the “hive mind” and active versus passive participation online. One thing I want to try is being more intentional with my screen time. For example, I could follow more educational creators, save useful posts, and search for content related to my academic or career interests. I do not think social media time is automatically “wasted,” but it depends on whether I am using it as a learning network or just passively reacting to content.

    1. Hi Amanda! that is a great idea, to follow educational creators and etc. I didn't think about that one, but these are some great ideas to use to stay intentional and useful instead of scrolling.

  3. Just checked my screen time for yesterday... I used Instagram for 1h 10mins and Threads for 42 mins! so total about 2 hours. I follow some tech-related accounts that post news about AI techs and education. This way I can get updated, but I skim them really quick and watch reels more for entertainment😅 If educational or informative content are funny (like using memes), many people including me will be more engaged!

    1. Wow! do you have any recommendations for content to follow? and I agree! more entertaining but educational content keeps the readers/viewers engaged.
