Using Social Media with Purpose

Simply inserting social media into education will not enhance learning. Teachers must know how to use these tools to provide meaningful learning activities with explicit learning intentions. To select appropriate technologies for my classroom as an elementary teacher, I try to focus on tools that promote collaboration, creativity, and engagement. If used purposefully, tools like social media and other web tools can assist in creating connected and engaging learning.

    Not sure I have an answer to this questions, but here is a question I have for you. When you create social media activities do you expect the students to use them in class, or at home for homework? So much of our lives take place in social media spaces, I wouldn't want to co-opt an in person space with a social media activity. I'd want them doing the activity face to face, in real time.

Online Teacher Communities

Teaching is not always easy. Thankfully there are online communities that offer teachers a place to connect with their peers. Education continues to change and grow as we learn new ways to help students learn. Online communities are a great way to learn from others and network. Are we really tagging people?

 Who are you talking to when you hashtag? Most humans think they are helping other humans discover their content. But what if we are talking to machines more than we are talking to humans? I’ve personally seen people alter how they write/type, when they post and even what they share based off of what they think the algorithm wants. Do you think social media is still primarily about connecting people, or has it become more about learning how to communicate?
